As a fellow Emergency Physician, you likely face many of the same challenges that I do. The press of clinical practice, family obligations and day-to-day life in our fast-paced world seem to leave little time for much else.

There is probably no other field in medicine that is evolving faster and is as broad in its scope as Emergency Medicine and, because our specialty embraces parts of virtually all the others, it is clearly not adequate to simply subscribe to the few Emergency Medicine journals if we truly want to stay current.

Every month key articles that are vitally important to the practice of Emergency Medicine are published in literally hundreds of other major journals -- the most important articles on the use of GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors are in the Cardiology journals -- the latest information on pediatric fever is in the Pediatric journals, and the most current information on the use of the D-dimer test is in the Pulmonary and Critical Care journals.

Bottom line -- the very nature of Emergency Medicine requires that we survey literally hundreds of journals if we really want to stay up-to-date in this broad-based specialty.
